Session Overview

“The Future Is Now: Exploring 21st-Century Teaching Ideas with the Next Generation of English Teachers” is a large roundtable session offered each year at the NCTE Annual Convention that provides undergraduate and master’s level students with an opportunity to present their innovative teaching ideas and research-driven pedagogical practices in a supportive, low-stress environment while allowing them to explore the visions of their peers from across the country. Students find their way to the “Future Is Now” session with the support of dedicated English teacher educators who encourage and prepare them to present their scholarship for a national audience. The session is sponsored by NCTE's English Language Arts Teacher Educators Graduate Strand (ELATE-GS).

Session Structure

The 2023 “Future Is Now” session is tentatively scheduled to be both “in person” and “virtual,” though we will ask all student presenters to record and submit video presentations in the virtual format. Student presenters who choose to participate in the “in-person” session in Columbus, Ohio, will also have the opportunity to share their work with a live audience.

Student presenters will prepare a presentation that runs 8-10 minutes. Virtual presentations will occur via Flipgrid, but students do not need to create an account. They only need a phone or computer with a camera and microphone to participate and view content via the Flipgrid links. Presenters may either (1) record themselves speaking directly to the camera with no visual supports, (2) screen share a visual presentation while recording an audio talk, or (3) upload a previously-recorded presentation.

For participants who choose to present at the in-person session, the virtual presentation essentially serves as a practice run. Student presenters will be expected to deliver in person the same presentation, again running 8-10 minutes. At most tables, there will be a total of three presentations. Questions and comments will be held until everyone has presented, and student presenters will have at least one respondent assigned to their table to help moderate the conversation after the presentations.

Please note that all participants, both virtual and in person, will be included in the session program, but only mentors and respondents who register for the NCTE Annual Convention will be included in the conference program. Due to the late submission date for student presentations, student presenters’ names and titles will not be included in the official NCTE program but will be included in the 2023 “Future Is Now” Program.
